Legendary singer-composer Bappi Lahiri passed away at the age of 69 following multiple health issues on Tuesday night, February 15. He took his last breaths in Mumbai’s CritiCare Hospital in Juhu and the death was confirmed by a hospital doctor. The singer had been suffering from Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) and chest infection.
“Lahiri had been admitted to the hospital for a month and was discharged on Monday. But his health deteriorated on Tuesday and his family called for a doctor to visit their home. He was brought to the hospital. He had multiple health issues. He died due to OSA (obstructive sleep apnea) shortly before midnight,” Dr Deepak Namjoshi, director of the hospital, told PTI.
What Is Sleep Apnea?
“Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a sleeping-related breathing disorder caused by the repetitive collapse of the upper airway during sleep. OSA occurs when the muscles supporting the soft tissues in the throat, such as the tongue and soft palate, relax and block the airway,” said Dr. Kalpana Nagpal – ENT Specialist in Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals Delhi. According to various studies, the most common cause of OSA in adults is excess weight and obesity.

“Sleep Apnea can be a major cause for many diseases like heart attacks, brain strokes, cancers, and the risk of sleep apnea increases in these patients more particularly. Silent sleep deaths can be one of the reasons of sleep apnea. So if you or anyone in your family have a problem of snoring then its important to get it checked up as soon as possible,” said Dr. Kalpana Nagpal – ENT Specialist in Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals Delhi.
Bappi Lahiri delivered popular songs in several films of the late 1970s-80s like ‘Chalte Chalte’, ‘Disco Dancer’, and ‘Sharaabi’. His last Bollywood song titled Bhankas was for the 2020 film ‘Baaghi 3’. The singer’s last appearance on the screen was with Salman Khan on reality show Bigg Boss 15, where he was promoting his grandson Swastik’s new song ‘Baccha Party’.
