The inaugural global summit on traditional medicine is scheduled for August 17-18 in Gandhinagar, Gujarat. Co-hosted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Ayush, this event is poised to leverage India’s extensive experience and proficiency in traditional medicine.
The objective is to ensure the well-being and health of all individuals
The summit’s purpose is to provide a platform for experts and practitioners to explore the latest scientific advancements and evidence-based insights within the sector. The overarching objective is to ensure the well-being and health of all individuals, as stated by the ministry.
The event will commence with an inauguration by WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. Union Health Minister Mansukh Mandaviya and Ayush Minister Sarbananda Sonowal will also be in attendance. The guest list extends to G20 health ministers, WHO regional directors, prominent figures from various countries across WHO’s regions, traditional medicine practitioners, scientists, health workers, and representatives from civil society organizations.
Munjpara Mahendrabhai Kalubhai, Union Minister of State for Ayush, expressed that the summit’s outcome will lead to a declaration supporting the development of the WHO Global Centre for Traditional Medicine. This event follows the foundation laying ceremony of the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine in Jamnagar the previous year, signifying the notable strides made by India’s diverse traditional medicine systems.
Renowned speakers will drive discussions across key focal points, including research, evidence, and education; policy, data, and regulations; innovation and digital health; and biodiversity, equity, and traditional healthcare knowledge.

The event will feature an exhibition showcasing global traditional medicine practices, symbolizing the integration of Traditional Medicine with the natural environment through the representation of ‘Kalpavriksha.’ This exhibit will also highlight the scientific and technological advancements pioneered by regional WHO centers and the Ministry of Ayush.
In 2022, WHO, with the support of the Government of India, established the Global Centre for Traditional Medicine. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, laid the foundation stone of WHO-GCTM last year in the presence of the Director-General, WHO, Dr Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus. The centre is a collaborative project of the Ministry of Ayush of India and the World Health Organization (WHO) and is the first and only global outpost for traditional medicine across the globe.
