Union Food and Consumer Affairs Minister Ram Vilas Paswan passed away at a private hospital in New Delhi on Thursday. He was 74 and had recently undergone heart surgery.

He was suffering from multiple health issues, including pre-existing heart conditions. He had undergone heart-related procedures earlier.

He was admitted to Fortis Escorts Heart Institute, Okhla, New Delhi with heart failure and kidney shut down. He was managed on medication and eventually by dialysis. He subsequently underwent heart surgery and right and left ventricular assist device was implantation to support heart function and recovery of vital organs.

For progressive worsening of heart failure, he was put on a ventilator and ECMO support for failing the heart and lungs. His medical condition deteriorated in the last 24 hours and despite continuous efforts, Ram Vilas Paswan passed away.

According to the Indian Heart Association, 50% of all heart attacks in Indians occur under 50 years of age and 25% of all heart attacks in Indians occur under 40 years of age. The population in cities is three times more prone to heart attacks than people living in the village.
