Brain Tumor Cases Rising Among Children In India, Warn Doctors

On World Brain Tumor Day, health experts from the International Association of Cancer Registries (IARC) reveal that cases of brain tumors are increasing slowly among children in the country. They have said that around 20 per cent of the growing cases of brain tumours occur among children. As per the report, brain tumour is the 10th most regular type of tumour that affects Indians.

The IARC says that nearly more than 28000 cases of brain tumour are reported in India per year and over 24000 patients lose their lives due to the disease per year. An oncologist, Dr. Aditya Gupta has said that cases of brain tumors have become more frequent in the country.

20 per cent of cases of brain tumours occur among children

An increasing number of brain tumour cases are diagnosed every year among people from different age ranges. Dr. Gupta has said that each year, around 40000 to 50000 people are affected with the dreaded disease and around 20 per cent of cases occur among children.

The head of the Neurosurgery unit at Primus Hospital, Dr. Ravindra Srivastava says that the frequency of the disease varies from 5 to 10 per 100000 populations. However, it is less known that only two per cent of tumours are cancerous. He has said that the early warning symptoms such as constant headaches, baffling nausea, vision issues, seizures, and cognitive issues should be addressed immediately.

The risk factors for brain tumours depend on the type of tumour. An elevated risk of having a brain tumor involves age as gliomas are more frequent in adults, while medulloblastomas are more common in kids, gender as meningiomas are more prevalent in women, while gliomas are faintly more prevalent in men, genetics or family history, exposure to radiation therapy for cancers or exposure to nuclear mishaps.

Preventing the brain from damage and injury and dodging exposure to toxic elements as well can reduce the risk. Notably, most cases of brain tumours affect people who don’t have any recognizable risk factors.
