Diabetes in India: Combating the Disease with Government Initiatives, Treatment, and Awareness Efforts
Diabetes, a prevalent non-communicable disease affecting millions in India, has garnered significant attention from the Government of India. With the goal of prevention, early diagnosis, and effective management, the National Health Mission (NHM) has implemented several initiatives to tackle the rising burden of diabetes.
Screening and Prevention
As part of the comprehensive approach to non-communicable diseases, a population-based screening initiative targets individuals above the age of 30 years for early detection of common NCDs, including diabetes and hypertension. Regular screenings play a crucial role in identifying individuals at risk and enabling timely interventions.
Awareness Generation
Promoting awareness about diabetes and its risk factors is a cornerstone of the prevention strategy. Ayushman Bharat Health and Wellness Centres actively engage in community-level awareness campaigns, disseminating information about diabetes prevention and the importance of a healthy lifestyle.
Healthy Lifestyle Initiatives
To further support diabetes prevention, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has launched the Eat Right Initiative, emphasizing safe and nutritious food practices at home. The initiative aims to foster healthier eating habits and reduce the risk of diabetes and other lifestyle-related diseases.
Access to Treatment
Diabetes patients in India receive treatment across various healthcare facilities, including government hospitals, medical colleges, and private sector institutions. The government ensures that treatment is either free or highly subsidized for those in need, enabling better access to essential diabetes care.
Free Essential Medicines
Recognizing the importance of medication affordability, the Free Drugs Service Initiative under NHM provides financial support to States/UTs to offer free essential medicines, including insulin, to underprivileged individuals. Additionally, the Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Pariyojana collaborates with state governments to make quality generic medicines available at affordable prices.
Through a combination of prevention, awareness, and accessible treatment, the Government of India is committed to combatting diabetes and enhancing the overall health and well-being of the population. These initiatives, backed by the National Health Mission, play a vital role in reducing the burden of diabetes and fostering a healthier nation.
