Government Initiative Aims to Promote Generic Medicines Across the Nation
In a significant move to make healthcare more affordable and accessible, the Indian government has called upon doctors to prioritize prescribing generic medicines. The initiative comes as more than 9600 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK) have been established, offering affordable generic drugs to citizens across all districts of the country. The emphasis on generic prescriptions is part of a broader effort to ensure rational drug usage and better healthcare for all.
Mandate for Generic Prescriptions Reinforced
Clause 1.5 of the Indian Medical Council (Professional Conduct, Etiquette, and Ethics) Regulations, 2002, has been reinforced to ensure that every physician prescribes drugs using generic names, preferably in capital letters. The regulation aims to promote the responsible and cost-effective use of medications. Additionally, the National Medical Commission Act, 2019, empowers State Medical Councils and the Ethics and Medical Registration Board to take disciplinary action against doctors violating these guidelines.
Promoting Affordable Healthcare through PMBJK
To make generic medicines widely accessible, the government has set up more than 9600 Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras (PMBJK) across the country. These centers offer a range of affordable generic drugs, making essential healthcare more affordable for the general public. The Department of Pharmaceuticals and the Pharmaceuticals & Medical Devices Bureau of India (PMBI) are actively spreading awareness about this initiative through various media channels and social platforms.
Leveraging Technology for Enhanced Awareness
The government’s efforts to promote generic medicines are further enhanced by the “Janaushadhi Sugam” mobile application. This user-friendly app enables users to locate nearby PMBJK outlets, search for specific Janaushadhi medicines, and find relevant contact details. The digital platform facilitates access to information and empowers citizens to make informed healthcare choices.
Support under National Health Mission (NHM)
As part of the National Health Mission (NHM), the government provides essential generic drugs free of cost in public health facilities. The support extends not only to drugs but also includes strengthening procurement systems, quality assurance, IT-backed supply chain management, warehousing, prescription audit, and grievance redressal. These measures ensure the effective implementation of the Free Drug Service Initiative.
The push to prioritize generic medicines in prescriptions is a positive step towards making healthcare more affordable and accessible for all citizens. With the establishment of numerous Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Janaushadhi Kendras and the active promotion of generic drugs through various media channels, the government aims to create a healthier and more inclusive healthcare system.
