Nurses: Unsung Heroes of Healthcare – Honoring their Dedication during the Pandemic

Nurses are the backbone of our healthcare sector. During the COVID-19 pandemic nurses all over the world played a critical role in patient recoveries. To honour the commitments, efforts and contribution of these frontline nursing warriors, the All India Institute of Ayurveda (AIIA), an autonomous institute under the Ministry of Ayush organised International Nurses Awareness Week from 4th-12th May, 2022.

The Resilience of Nursing Warriors

As part of the celebrations, the Institute organised a series of activities in the run up to International Nurses Day which is observed on 12th May every year. Dr (Prof.) Tanuja Nesari, Director, AIIA, inaugurated the event. Dr. Rajagopala S., Prof. (Dr.) Mahesh Kr Vyas, Dr Shiv Kumar Harti, Dr Namrata Raj, Dr. S.K Bhatted, and other dignitaries graced the event and motivated the nursing department.

Innovative Initiatives by the Nursing Department of AIIA

The activities of the week started with a street play, wherein nurses were educated on substance abuse, its impact on people and society, and were informed about steps that should be taken to control it. Various patient awareness programmes on different topics like mental health and its remedies, importance of Ayurvedic diet in daily routine, management of diarrhoea, stress management, and others were organised by esteemed guests and nurses from AIIA.

Empowering Girls Through Thought-Provoking Role Plays

The nursing department of AIIA also staged three role plays on ‘Save the Girl Child’. The first play highlighted the issue of female foeticide in the Indian society and the declining sex ratio in India, the second one touched upon the issue of social discrimination against girls, while the third demonstrated the importance of girls’ education.

A session on ‘Sitting Yoga’

An interesting session on ‘Sitting Yoga’ was also conducted for patients at AIIA, wherein they were educated on Yoga asanas that can be done while sitting on a chair in offices or homes or even at a work-from-home setting.
Furthermore, the Nursing department organised several team building activities for its staff members to encourage team spirit among nurses.
