Diabetes mellitus, commonly known as diabetes, is one of the most common diseases. Also, it is among the leading cause of mortality because of all the ‘complications’ that it can cause. As it involves all organs of the body, the disease may impact anybody part – kidney, heart, eye, etc. The lifestyle disorder has also been listed as key comorbidity that makes people prone to COVID-19. The management of this disease is extremely crucial but on several occasions, it simply goes unnoticed. And this is when it causes more complications. There the most important part is to identify the signs of the disease and seek medical help immediately.
According to experts, one can have some symptoms around your mouth that can help you identify the disease before it’s too late. As diabetes is a systemic disease, it involves everybody parts of our body and the mouth is simply not exempted. This is why when one talks about diabetes, kidneys, the nerves, and other body parts are involved. But among all these body parts, the one body part which one talks about the least is the mouth.
While infection of the mouth is very common, it is very usual in those with diabetes. If someone has well-controlled diabetes and suddenly things go haywire, it is a kind of formal announcement that one must check for urine infections and for dental and oral infections.
One must get the mouth examined for foul breath, which is called Halitosis. “If your sugar level is bad, you will notice the foul breath. Also, if there is foul breath and some infections in the oral cavity, one must consult the dental surgeon,” an expert was quoted as saying.
If left untreated, diabetes can be very dangerous and can cause heart disease, kidney disorders, stroke, neuropathy and even blindness. This can cause big stress on the healthcare system and the key is timely diagnosis and proper care.
