Everyone is talking about the keto diet ever since Bengali film actress Mishti Mukherjee passed away. This is because reports suggest that Mishti died due to kidney failure which was caused because of the keto diet. This incident also triggered the debate about how healthy these diets are that most of the celebrities are following these days.
HealthWire spoke to Dr Priyanka Rohatgi – Chief Nutritionist, Apollo Hospitals – to understand top diets followed by celebrities and how healthy they are? Talking about the health benefits of these diets, Dr Rohatgi said that a proper diet should sustainable and healthy with long-term benefits.

Vegan diet: A vegan or plant-based diet is essentially a plan which excludes all animal products, including meat, dairy, and eggs.

KETO: The ketogenic diet is one of the most popular weight loss diets the world over. This diet plan is a high-fat, moderate-protein and low-carb that helps in weight loss by achieving ketosis. Ketosisi is a metabolic state where the liver burns body fat and provides fuel for the body, as there is limited access to glucose.
GM Diet (General Motors diet): This diet plan promises to help you lose around 7 kilos in a week. The duration of the diet is one week and on each day you are supposed to eat different kind of foods. The diet schedule involves eating detoxifying foods that have negative calories.

Intermittent fasting: It is an eating pattern that cycles between periods of fasting and eating. It focuses on when to eat rather than what to eat. It is an eating pattern and not a diet in the conventional sense. People need to follow it under supervision for a month or two. About 150 healthy adults were recently researched who lost weight using this but ended up in so much of muscle loss which is unhealthy and compromises the immunity and general health
Alkaline diet: The alkaline diet basically emphasises good, old-fashioned healthy eating habit. The diet endorses eating more vegetables, fruits and drinking lots of water and cutting back on sugar, alcohol, meat and processed foods.
Raw diet: It is usually a plant-based, being made up mostly of fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds. While most raw food diets are completely plant-based, some may also consume raw eggs and dairy.
Fad diets are short-lived and one must be sensible enough to identify them. Some quick ways to identify fad diets are-
- Promises a quick fix which is difficult to believe
- Strong jargens used like ‘magic’ foods or combinations of foods
- Implies that food can change body chemistry
- Excludes or severely restricts food groups or nutrients, such as carbohydrates
- Has rigid rules that focus on weight loss
- Makes claims based on a single study or testimonials only
Because they often cut out key foods, fad diets may cause the following symptoms:
- Dehydration
- Weakness and fatigue
- Nausea and headaches
- Constipation
- Inadequate vitamin and mineral intake
According to the doctor, there are bad effects on the gut mocrobiome (your natural healthy bacteria in intestines) and when you try to go back to normal food you find challenges with digestion.

“Supervision, monitoring and advice are needed before they are started as each one has a different medical and physical need. These aren’t sustainable due to impractical choices, expenses and satiety,” she said.
“It is crucial to know that no diet is perfect for weight loss as different diets work for different body types. A healthy, well-balanced diet is what our ancestors have been following for past many years. A proper diet should be sustainable and healthy with long-term benefits. It is always wise to have a healthy diet consisting of all the five food groups, that is, a mix of the best vitamins and minerals, adequate water intake, exercise, portion control, and a stress-free sleep cycle. In short, intuitive, clean and mindful eating is the best way,” the doctor added.
“Breakfast like a king; lunch like a prince; dinner like a pauper” works best.
