Winter brings a sense of relaxation that no other season brings. But not for everyone. Especially those who suffer from joint pain or arthritis – which worsens in winter. Arthritis means inflammation of a joint. This is the most common health problem among older people and reports suggest that there is a spike of around 50 per cent in the number of senior citizens seeking treatment for the disease during winter.
Why Does This Happen?
The main reason behind the surge in arthritis problem is that pain receptors become more sensitive in this season. Also, the pain and stiffness worsen in colder temperatures because of more muscle spasms. The blood circulation to the fingers and toes reduces during the winter and this amplifies arthritis pain. Also, we tend to have less sunlight during winters, and lower vitamin D levels lead to weekend bones and joints.
Some Home Remedies
Turmeric is a miracle herb and the curcumin element present in it is known to reduce inflammation of the joints. Add half a teaspoon of ground ginger in one teaspoon of turmeric and boil this mixture for 10-15 minutes in a cup of water. Applying it to the affected joints two to three times a day will give relief.
Having fenugreek or methi will equal amount of dry ginger powder and jaggery can cure joint pain.
Tulsi is considered beneficial for arthritis – especially rheumatoid arthritis.
Ajwain or carom seeds are known for their anti-inflammatory components. This is why it is a great remedy for arthritis pain. Anesthetic properties of ajwain make it very useful to relieve excessive pain during the winter season. Add a spoonful of carom seeds to hot water and soak your joints in the water. Do this for around 10 minutes. It will ease swelling and pain.
Alternatively, you can make a paste of these seeds and apply it to the affected areas to alleviate the pain.
