Criteria for Donors:
- Donation Frequency: Once in 3 months (males), once in 4 months (females).
- You must be in good health & feeling well (Temperature / Pulse / BP should be normal).
- Donor should be in age group of 18 to 65 yrs.
- Donor should NOT be less than 45 kgs body weight.
- Women post delivery should have 1 year gap & should have stopped lactating.
- Hemoglobin should not be less than 12.5 gms.
- No History of Malaria for past 3 yrs (in endemic areas).
- No Tattoo / acupuncture performed on donor in the past at least 12 months.
- Should not have had vaccination for Cholera, Typhoid, Diphtheria, Tetanus, plague, or taken gamma globulin for past 15 days & not taken Rabies vaccination for past one year.
- There should be No scars of IV on the arms (to rule out drug addiction).
- Should NOT have any Cancer.
- Should NOT have infections like Hepatitis B, C, TB, Leprosy & HIV.
- Should NOT have Epilepsy, Asthma, bleeding disorders.
- Should NOT be on steroids.
- No dental procedures should have been done in past three days.
- Diabetes on treatment of Insulin are not eligible.
- Donor should have No History of genital discharge or scars, multiple sex partners and drug addiction.
Ethics And Precautions
1) No accepting or giving cash for Blood Donation per se.
2) Donation only in the licensed blood bank, blood donation camps, or a bloodmobile.
3) Post Donation replenishment of fluids by having oral drinks,
4) Avoid lifting weights or strenuous physical activity.
4) ‘Rh’ factor has no role in donation as every bottle of donated blood has to be cross-matched with the recipient’s blood. Hence, donated blood will always be utilized by giving it to a recipient whose blood group / ‘Rh’ factor matches that of Donor.
