The survey, conducted across urban areas in India, focused on regions including Delhi-NCR, Jaipur, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. It highlighted the impact of the pandemic on the lives, aspirations, preferences, opinions, and consumer behavior of senior citizens.

Mental Health Impact: Over 57% of seniors experienced mental health issues during the crisis, emphasizing the need for comprehensive support

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on people’s lives worldwide, particularly on vulnerable populations such as senior citizens. In India, a recent survey conducted by Antara, a subsidiary of Max India Limited, has revealed concerning findings about the healthcare experiences of senior citizens during this challenging period.

The survey, which included over 2,100 senior citizens aged 60 and above, focused on urban areas in Delhi-NCR, Jaipur, Mumbai, Pune, Bengaluru, and Hyderabad. It aimed to understand the impact of the pandemic on the lives of seniors and uncover insights into their healthcare needs and challenges.

Urban Perspective: The survey focused on urban areas, shedding light on the healthcare needs and challenges of seniors in major cities

According to the survey, a staggering 70% of the respondents reported a lack of access to proper healthcare during the COVID-19 crisis. This highlights the urgent need to address healthcare gaps and ensure that senior citizens receive the necessary medical support, especially during times of crisis.

Another significant finding was that over 57% of senior citizens experienced mental health issues during the pandemic. The prolonged isolation and fear of infection have taken a toll on the mental well-being of elderly individuals, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive healthcare that includes mental health support.

Rajit Mehta, MD and CEO of Antara, emphasized the need to understand the evolving needs and concerns of urban seniors. He stated, “The pandemic has brought about notable shifts in their living patterns and preferences, consumption of technology, along with a rise in mental health concerns.” The survey findings will play a crucial role in gauging the needs and demands of senior citizens, enabling better support and care for this vulnerable population.

Fear and Concerns: Senior citizens expressed fears of infection, social isolation, and concerns about the lack of preparedness to combat the virus

The survey also shed light on various concerns expressed by senior citizens. Around 65% of respondents feared getting infected with COVID-19, while 58% were worried about social isolation due to strict guidelines. Additionally, the lack of preparedness to combat the virus was a top concern for 53% of seniors.

To address these challenges, it is crucial to enhance awareness and access to healthcare services for senior citizens. Providing them with accurate information, support, and mental health resources can significantly improve their well-being. Furthermore, the government and relevant stakeholders must work collaboratively to develop tailored healthcare solutions that cater to the unique needs of the elderly population.

As India’s population continues to age and life expectancy increases, the demand for allied healthcare services and specialized care for senior citizens is expected to rise. The findings of this survey serve as a valuable resource for policymakers, healthcare providers, and society at large to develop sustainable strategies that prioritize the health and well-being of senior citizens.
