Suspected Cases of Monkeypox Reported in Telangana – Health Authorities on High Alert

Samples Sent to NIV-Pune for Testing as Monkeypox Cases Surge

Suspected cases of Monkeypox have emerged in Telangana, raising concerns among health officials. The infected individuals are being closely monitored, and samples have been collected from them. These samples have been sent to the National Institute of Virology (NIV)-Pune for testing and confirmation. The rising number of cases has prompted health authorities to stay on high alert, and they are taking all necessary measures to prevent further spread.

Monkeypox – A Zoonotic Virus Causing Global Fear

Monkeypox is a zoonotic virus, meaning it can be transmitted from animals to humans. The virus has caused widespread fear worldwide due to its potential to cause serious health issues. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), over 200 cases of Monkeypox infection have been reported so far. Health officials are working diligently to contain the spread and protect the public from potential outbreaks.

Prevention Measures to Safeguard Against Monkeypox

Preventing contact with infected animals is crucial in stopping the transmission of Monkeypox. Individuals are advised to avoid any interaction with sick animals and stay away from areas where infected animals have been found. Additionally, using bedding, clothes, towels, or any items used by an infected animal or person should be strictly avoided.

Importance of Isolation and Personal Hygiene

If an individual is suspected of having Monkeypox or has been in contact with an infected person or animal, immediate isolation is necessary. This measure helps prevent the virus from spreading further. Furthermore, maintaining good hand hygiene by regularly washing hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based hand sanitizers is essential in reducing the risk of infection.

Guidelines for Dealing with Infected Individuals

Patients showing extensive lesions or respiratory symptoms should be kept in a separate room or area away from other family members and pets. Wearing a surgical mask is crucial for both the infected individual and other household members to prevent the spread of the virus. Properly covering skin lesions with long sleeves, long pants, and bandages helps minimize contact with others.

Parallel with COVID-19 Precautions

Interestingly, the preventive measures followed during a suspected or confirmed Monkeypox case are similar to those observed during the COVID-19 outbreak. Health authorities are leveraging existing protocols to contain the spread and protect public health.
