In recent times, medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus have gained significant attention for their roles in managing diabetes and aiding in weight loss. These medications, which contain the active ingredient semaglutide, are increasingly being prescribed to help individuals control their blood sugar levels and achieve sustainable weight loss.
According to Dr. Vinus Taneja, Consultant, Department of Internal Medicine, Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, “OZEMPIC and WEGOVY are the two brand names for the same drug—semaglutide. Both are injectable preparations available in pre-filled pens. OZEMPIC is used in Type-II Diabetes Mellitus (DM) to improve glycemic control in diabetics in addition to exercise & diet control. WEGOVY is used for weight loss in both adults & children above 12 years for long-term weight management along with diet control and exercise.”
This means that while both Ozempic and Wegovy contain the same active ingredient, their uses differ. Ozempic is primarily for managing diabetes, whereas Wegovy is aimed at helping with weight loss.
Rybelsus is another form of semaglutide, but it comes as an oral tablet. Dr. Taneja explains, “Rybelsus is an oral tablet formulation of semaglutide used for Type II DM and is available in India. It is not recommended for children & under 18 years of age.”
How Semaglutide Works?
Semaglutide is a glucagon-like-peptide-1 receptor agonist (GLP-1 agonist). It works by increasing insulin release, delaying gastric emptying, and reducing appetite. This mechanism helps both in controlling blood sugar levels and managing weight.
Common Side Effects
Dr. Taneja explains the side effects, “Bloated feeling, upset stomach, heart burns, nausea, sometimes diarrhea or constipation, or headache. So Wegovy, Ozempic AND Rybelsus are 3 FDA approved drugs with same content Semaglutide in different doses with different routes of administration and for different purposes, so it is most important to understand that they are not interchangeable their usage & eligibility criteria for a particular patient has to be decided by a physician. Both Wegovy & Ozempic have gained lot of attention of late & both are in shortage due to increased demand. Both the drugs serve different purposes & were studied for different reasons in clinical trials and their usage is approved for different conditions.”
The Importance of Proper Usage
Dr. Taneja highlights that “Wegovy, Ozempic, and Rybelsus are three FDA-approved drugs with the same content, semaglutide, in different doses, with different routes of administration, and for different purposes. It is most important to understand that they are not interchangeable. Their usage & eligibility criteria for a particular patient have to be decided by a physician.”
Compounding Medications
Compounding involves mixing or combining drug ingredients to prepare a medication. Dr. Taneja warns, “Compounded drugs are not approved by the FDA. So patients should not use a compounded drug when an approved drug is available.”
Weight loss remains a major challenge worldwide. The World Health Organization (WHO) reported that in 2022, 1 in 8 people globally were living with obesity. The prevalence of overweight among children and adolescents aged 15-19 years rose from 8% in 1990 to 20% in 2022.
Dr. Taneja points out that the reasons for obesity are multifactorial, involving environmental, psychosocial, and genetic factors, as well as a lack of proper access to health education and a healthy lifestyle. Even with medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus, diet control and exercise are crucial.
To combat obesity, it’s important to:
– Limit consumption of sugar and sweetened beverages.
– Encourage children to stop consuming soft drinks and high-fat snacks.
– Participate in outdoor activities and sports.
– Minimize screen time to 1-2 hours per day.
– Ensure daily exercise and adequate sleep.
– Seek counseling for a healthy lifestyle and regular health checkups to understand weight gain.
Parents play a vital role by providing emotional and psychological support to their children, participating in physical activities with them, and seeking proper medical advice for overweight or obese children and adolescents.
By understanding and utilizing medications like Ozempic, Wegovy, and Rybelsus appropriately, along with maintaining a healthy lifestyle, individuals can manage their diabetes and weight more effectively.
