Co-WIN Portal Facilitates Registration of Blood Donors Ahead of World Blood Donor Day

Government’s Initiative to Promote Blood Donation and Raise Awareness

In preparation for the upcoming World Blood Donor Day on June 14, the Indian government has taken a significant step towards promoting voluntary blood donation. The government has decided to enable the registration of volunteers for blood donation on the Co-WIN portal. This innovative move aims to encourage citizens to become regular, non-remunerated, voluntary blood donors and contribute to maintaining an adequate supply of safe blood for those in need.

Union Health Secretary Urges States to Maximize Blood Donor Registration

Union Health Secretary, Rajesh Bhushan, recently held a meeting with all states and Union territories to review the preparations for World Blood Donor Day. During the meeting, he emphasized the need to raise awareness about the importance of regular blood donation and encouraged states to maximize blood donor registration. Bhushan also stressed the significance of committed, year-round blood donation to ensure universal and timely access to safe blood transfusions.

Campaign Slogan for World Blood Donor Day 2023

This year’s World Blood Donor Day campaign carries the powerful slogan, “Donating Blood is an Act of Solidarity. Join the Efforts and Save Lives.” The campaign aims to inspire individuals to come forward and contribute to the noble cause of saving lives through voluntary blood donation.

Pledge Ceremonies and Blood Group Testing Encouraged

In an effort to felicitate blood donors and boost participation, the government has recommended pledge ceremonies at the block, district, and gram panchayat levels. These ceremonies will be administered by the respective “sarpanchs” (village heads). Additionally, the district collectors or district magistrates will oversee the activities in their districts.

To ensure a smooth facilitation of the activities on World Blood Donor Day, the states have been advised to provide blood group testing facilities at all primary health centers, community health centers, sub-district hospitals, district hospitals, and other blood banks. This initiative aims to help people know their blood group, which can be crucial in emergencies and for the purpose of blood donation.

Streamlined Donor Registration and Blood Donation Process

The Co-WIN portal will serve as a platform for the registration of volunteers for blood donation. E-Raktkosh, the Blood Centre/Laboratory interface, will play a key role, and all blood banks will have to register on this platform. After the completion of a successful blood donation, a certificate will be generated on E-Raktkosh by the respective blood bank, and the certificate will be made available to the volunteer through the Arogya Setu mobile application.

Moreover, the Co-WIN portal and Arogya Setu will provide donors with a list of nearby Blood Centres and upcoming Blood Donation Camps, making it easier for them to participate and contribute to this life-saving cause.
