29-years-old Santosh was diagnosed with a disease which leads to kidney failure, and the only treatment available for it is kidney transplant. He had been undergoing regular dialysis treatment for a long time. Later, his family planned for Kidney transplantation for him. His father was eligible to donate his kidney to his son. Everything was going as per the plan.
But all of a sudden Covid-19 came. General impression is that during lockdown major surgeries and kidney transplant were stopped at all hospitals. But this is not true. Even Santosh’s family was worried whether it was the right time to go ahead with the transplant.
Alternative to the kidney transplant was to visit hospital every other day for dialysis. But the risk of contracting infection was more if he had travelled more for dialysis. After due considerations Manipal Hospitals core team decided to go ahead with Kidney transplantation.
