India To Kick Off Covid-19 Vaccination Drive From January 16: All You Need To Know

On Saturday, the suspense over the vaccination drive for Covid-19 ended. The Covid vaccination drive in India will commence on January 16, the government said.

The decision was taken at a High-Level Meeting on Saturday by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where he examined the status of Covid 19 and the preparedness for vaccines across states and union territories.

The new electoral roll for Lok Sabha and Legislative Assembly elections will be used to classify the population aged 50 years or more, according to the health ministry guidelines on Covid-19 vaccination.

Who Will Get It First?

Priority would be given to nearly three crore vaccination healthcare and frontline staff. After inoculation, the government will then vaccinate those over 50 years of age and those under 50 population groups with co-morbidities of almost 27 crores.

How Has India Prepared For The Inoculation Of The Vaccine?

To evaluate its vaccine delivery system and logistical challenges, India has conducted three phases of dry runs across the region. The first dry run was performed on December 28-29 in eight districts in four states. There were 74 districts in the second dry run and it was conducted on Jan 3. On Jan 8, the third dry run was carried out across 615 districts covering 4895 session locations in 33 States/UTs.

A preparation framework was outlined for vaccinators and vaccine administrators, which is a central component of the vaccination exercise. During a national-level training of trainers comprising state immunization officers, cold chain officers, IEC officials, development partners, etc. 2,360 participants were trained. So far, more than 61,000 project managers, 2 lakh vaccinators, and 3.7 lakh other members of the vaccination team have been trained as part of the state, district, and block-level training.

What All Vaccines Are Available In India?

India has currently approved two vaccines for limited emergency use approval – Oxford-Covishield AstraZeneca’s and Bharat Biotech’s Covaxin on 3 January. There is a minimum of seven other vaccines in the pipeline. Zydus Cadila’s ZyCov-D, which has been approved for phase 3 trials, Russia Sputnik, which is tied up with Dr. Reddy’s and Pfizer-Biotech vaccines, are popular names among them.

How To Register For Vaccine?

The Government has announced the introduction of the Co-WIN Vaccine Registration Application. The program is, however, not yet available for public use and is in the pre-product process. It has the data of health officials who are going to collect the vaccine first in line.

Over 75 health officials from Lakh have already registered for it. Please do not download any app or browse any website that claims to provide you with the vaccine or request your personal registration information.

When released, the Co-WIN application will provide real-time information on the stocks of vaccines, their storage temperature, and individualized monitoring of Covid-19 vaccine recipients. Upon satisfactory completion of the vaccine schedule, it will assist program managers at all levels through automated session allocation for pre-registered beneficiaries, their verification, and the generation of a digital certificate.

Driving license, health insurance smart card issued under the labor ministry scheme, MGNREGA work card, official ID cards issued by MPs/MLAs/MLCs, PAN card, bank/post office passbooks, passport, pension papers, service ID cards issued to employees by central/state government/Public Ltd Companies or Voter I can be created with a photo at the time of registration.
