Neta App, the technology platform that promotes civic engagement, conducted a survey to gauge the citizen satisfaction with Modi Government’s efforts to battle the COVID-19 crisis. Basis the findings of the survey, 71% Indians are satisfied with how the government is handling the crisis. Over 50,000 people participated in the survey conducted by Neta App across 23 states and NCR region which was conducted between April 11 and April 12, 2020.
On 24 March, the Government of India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi ordered a nationwide lockdown for 21 days, limiting movement of the entire 1.3 billion population of India as a preventive measure against the 2020 coronavirus pandemic in India. When asked about the same,65% respondents said the lockdown in India was implemented at the right time. All the states including Rajasthan, West Bengal, Bihar amongst many others showed agreement. Even most of the non- BJP ruled states conveyed a positive sentiment.
Government’s preparedness in comparison to other countries
The survey further revealed, 68% citizens feel that India’s response to Covid-19 has been better than its western counterparts. All states including Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra resonated this sentiment. India took serious measures to control the situation including a 21- day nationwide lockdown of all public and private offices, transport, industrial establishments, educational institutions and places of worship.
Extension of Lockdown
The survey highlights that people have a mixed opinion regarding the extension of the lockdown. On an average, 55% of respondents from across the country said they will support the government in case the lockdown has to be extended while 45% said they will not support it. While citizens from states like Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Bihar and Haryana will strongly support the government in case the lockdown is extended, almost 50% citizens from states including Kerala, Himachal Pradesh, Goa do not approve of it.
