UNICEF commends India’s relentless efforts and diverse collaborations in reaching the 2 billion vaccine doses milestone
India has reached a momentous milestone by administering 2 billion doses of COVID-19 vaccines, garnering praise from UNICEF for this extraordinary achievement. The country’s leadership, along with the unwavering commitment of healthcare and frontline workers, has made this feat possible.
UNICEF, the United Nations agency for children, commends India for completing the administration of 2 billion vaccine doses within just 18 months. This accomplishment stands as a testament to the grit and dedication of India’s health workers, who have tirelessly worked to ensure vaccination coverage across the country. Overcoming challenges posed by multiple waves of the pandemic, inclement weather, difficult terrain, and hard-to-reach areas, they have demonstrated unwavering commitment and resilience.
The milestone not only recognizes the efforts of healthcare workers but also acknowledges the contribution of scientists, health practitioners, vaccine manufacturers, and policymakers. Their collective efforts have ensured the timely availability and equitable distribution of vaccines across the nation. The vision to vaccinate the eligible population, coupled with meticulous planning, has played a vital role in India’s successful achievement of this milestone.
Acknowledging the dedication of healthcare workers and the support of various stakeholders
UNICEF, as a partner to the Government of India, has been actively supporting the pandemic response. The agency has procured and supplied over 4,195 pieces of electrical cold chain equipment, including walk-in coolers, freezers, ice-lined refrigerators, and deep freezers. Additionally, UNICEF has provided more than 600,000 cold boxes and vaccine carriers, further facilitating the smooth distribution of vaccines.
UNICEF continues its collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, extending support in national communication campaigns. Through communication, advocacy, and social mobilization efforts, UNICEF has raised awareness about the importance of preventive behaviors and the COVID-19 vaccination drive. The agency’s real-time media monitoring has effectively countered misinformation and dispelled myths surrounding vaccines, promoting their uptake. Furthermore, simplified scientific messages and compelling audio-visual materials produced by UNICEF have played a crucial role in disseminating accurate information and encouraging the public to participate in India’s vaccination program.
