If you’re aiming to maintain a trim body and shed excess fat, consider turning to the unassuming cardamom. Recent research has unveiled a plethora of health and dietary advantages linked to cardamom consumption, such as heightened appetite, fat loss, and inflammation reduction.
Cardamom, a popular spice in numerous global cuisines, boasts a cozy herbal flavor and an aromatic blend reminiscent of eucalyptus, mint, and pepper.

Scientists hailing from the Texas A&M College of Agriculture and Life Sciences have bestowed the label of a “superfood” upon this spice. Principal investigator Luis Cisneros-Zevallos, from the university, shared, “Our findings indicate that this unassuming spice has the capacity to burn calories, maintain body weight, and even increase appetite and food intake.”
The study, featured in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences, was conducted utilizing live animal subjects. Various doses of cardamom seeds were incorporated into a standard diet. The outcome demonstrated that while cardamom does increase appetite, it simultaneously elevates energy expenditure and prompts a reduction in fat mass, as reported by Cisneros-Zevallos.
The research also provided suggested dosages for human consumption— a minimum of 77 milligrams of cardamom bioactives for an adult weighing approximately 132 pounds. This beneficial amount could be achieved by consuming a daily intake of eight to ten cardamom pods.
The study solidified the notion that cardamom influences neural circuits responsible for regulating adipose tissue lipolysis and the mitochondrial oxidative metabolism in the liver and skeletal muscles.
Cisneros-Zevallos highlighted that preceding studies have already unveiled cardamom’s anti-inflammatory properties. His research suggests that cardamom might mitigate low-grade inflammation, a catalyst for chronic inflammation and the onset of various ailments.
He remarked, “Our team has stumbled upon an incredible potential to harness cardamom for overall well-being.”
“Given this newfound attribute of cardamom seeds, they could find utility across different sectors, including sports nutrition, functional foods, and dietary supplements, contributing to the creation of healthier food choices.”

Cisneros-Zevallos conveyed that the research underlines cardamom’s potential for curbing appetite and promoting weight loss. He envisions this newfound trait in cardamom being employed in the expanding realm of sports nutrition or as a tool to stimulate appetite in those recuperating.
“There exists a vast array of potential health applications for cardamom and its naturally occurring compounds,” he concluded.
