Winter Is finally Here! This chilly season is bad for your skin. Dry skin can cause itching, bleeding, and even a rash. Winter weather can make it more difficult to manage.
The temperature is expected to drop further in the coming days. During winters, the body heat usually experiences a drop as the environment cools. At the same time, the body is adjusting to the new climate. The cold weather depletes your skin of moisture and makes your skin dry, itchy, and rough. It is very important for you to get careful nourishment and gentle care during this season.
Dr. Ritupurna Dash, the founder of DASH Dermatology, shares some important tips on the management of dry skin during winter season in a conversation with HealthWire:
- Cleansing- As winters mean dry, scaly skin, cleansing your skin is the first step for any skincare routine. You can use an oil-based cleanser to break down any makeup, dirt, excess oils, and build-up on your skin.
- Moisturizing– It is super important to provide the necessary hydrating and moisturizing elements to your skin during winter season. Moisturizer nourishes and restores your skin efficiently without leaving it feeling greasy or heavy. Moisturizing yourself with coconut or virgin coconut oil prevents dryness after bathing.

- Avoid using a hot shower– The water should be lukewarm for the bath. Even in the winter, it’s important not to overheat the water, because, it may reduce reduce the skin’s moisture and lead to flakiness and dryness.
- Exfoliation- You need to exfoliate your skin regularly to get back the soft and smooth skin. Exfoliation is necessary for all the skin types. You should be exfoliating your facial skin and the rest of the body, especially areas like elbows, knees, feet that tend to become dark. However, don’t scrub your skin too hard.
- SPF– SPF is the single most important treatment for your skin with major benefits. No matter how much you enjoy the mild sunshine on your body this time, the harmful effect of UV rays remains as same as summers.
It is very common to have Dry, red, and burning skin caused by a windburn and it and would require appropriate treatment. So the advice is to cover the exposed area of the skin when stepping out. Use gloves, caps, socks as protective wear.
It is advised to see your doctor if your skin problem continues for more than two to three days.
