In an extraordinary tale of survival, a pre-term baby, conceived through in-vitro fertilization (IVF), embarked on a challenging journey to life at Fortis Vasant Kunj. Born as part of a twin pregnancy, this infant faced an uphill battle, weighed a mere 704 grams, and had multiple comorbidities.
The Team’s Determination

A Series of Challenges
The baby’s early days were fraught with challenges. Shortly after birth, the infant went into shock but was successfully stabilized within 24 hours. Throughout the course of treatment, the baby endured multiple co-morbidities, including desaturation, brain seizures, and cardiac issues, such as Patent Ductus Arteriosus with Pulmonary Hypertension. The infant underwent 12 blood transfusions and received blood products to support their fragile health.
A Triumph Over Adversity
After an arduous 115 days of intensive medical intervention and unwavering care, the baby was finally discharged in a healthy state. This remarkable achievement was made possible by the collaborative efforts of the medical team, who adopted a multi-disciplinary approach to address the infant’s complex medical challenges.
The Critical Phase
The baby’s survival journey began with a critical phase immediately after birth. Born prematurely at just 25 weeks of gestation, equivalent to 6 months of pregnancy, the odds were stacked against the infant. Preterm deliveries of this nature typically carry a staggering 50% immediate mortality rate. Tragically, one of the twins did not survive beyond birth, leaving the other in an extremely precarious state.
A Glimpse into the Challenges
The pre-term baby, who had a birth weight of merely 704 grams, encountered numerous hurdles during their hospital stay. Assisted ventilation was required for a staggering 80 days, and the infant underwent a remarkable 10 to 12 blood transfusions and received blood products to address critical anemia. The baby faced cardiac complications and experienced multiple episodes of infection affecting their premature lungs. Additionally, there were instances of intraventricular hemorrhage, a condition involving brain hemorrhaging.

After an incredible 115-day journey marked by tenacity, unwavering care, and medical excellence, the baby was discharged from Fortis Vasant Kunj with a weight of 1.8 kgs. Remarkably, the infant’s body systems were functioning optimally, and there were no reported complications at the time of discharge.
